A well for sons

The majority of families in a village seem to have sons and the belief is that it's because of the water they drink from a well. The village's name, Gieng Thung, also came from the same legend. The village is located at Hamlet 11, Hung Thong Commune, Hung Nguyen District, Nghe An Province. On the way to the village, DTiNews spoke with Hoang Van Duong, born in 1982. "It's quite difficult for males here to find life partners because there are very few females," he said. Nguyen Thi Lien, 55, is a commune official and proudly shared, "Men accounted for 80% in this village from 1960s to 1990s. My family is among three who have daughters." Sharing the same opinion with many other people, Hoang Van Ban, a 80 year old man of Gieng Thung also believes that people here give birth mainly to sons because of the well's water. He himself has 4 sons and 9 grandsons out of the total of 11 grandchildren. According to villagers here, the well was made in 1912 by Ban's father. Since that day, water from the well has never dried out. People think that the well is located right at the tail of a dragon so it contains a lot of water. The well has become a pride for the people here and a part of their cultural life. Every New Year's Eve, the whole village gathers around the well to sing and dance. They restore it every year to protect the precious water source. However, gender balance is now improving as people have started to create more wells around the village for water. Spritual legend of drinking water from the special well to have sons still exists. However, some are waiting for a scientific explanation.
