Land complaints rise sharply after Haiphong case

The Governmental Inspectorate has recorded a much higher number of complaints to legislative agencies after the Haiphong land use dispute. Higher number of complaints were reported after the Haiphong land use dispute Huynh Phong Tranh, Chief Government Inspector, said that the number of people lodging complaints have increased by 50%. Of these 70% involved land management. "The scale of the complaints is also larger, involving more people," Tranh said. Tranh added that the main reason for this is not the Haiphong case, but mainly people's growing dissatisfaction with improper policies of local governments. But, he added, that the incident should be taken as a lesson to avoid similar situations in the future. "People's lack of knowledge of the law is one of the leading reasons for the increased complaints," he said. The Government Inspectorate also revealed that in the first quarter of this year they have had to make 11 official reports assessing state-owned enterprises and ministries, including the Viettel Group, the Vietnam Oil and Gas Group (PVN) and the Song Da Group. They uncovered financial misconducts amounting VND 30,720 billion, and proposed to reclaim over VND3,700 billion for the state budget.
