Vietnam’s oil exploitation projects within exclusive economic zone

The affirmation was made by Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesperson Luong Thanh Nghi at a press briefing in Hanoi on April 12 in reply to media questions about Vietnam's reaction after China asked Russia to stop its oil exploitation in the East Sea. Vietnam's cooperation projects in this field with foreign partners, including the one with Russian gas giant Gazprom, are on the country's continental shelf and within the exclusive economic zone, and fully belong to its sovereignty and jurisdiction rights in line with international law, especially the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). Vietnam welcomes foreign partners to cooperate with the country in the oil and gas field on its continental shelf and exclusive economic zone on the basis of respect for Vietnamese laws. Vietnam is committed to protecting the legitimate interests of foreign partners operating in Vietnam, Mr Nghi said. Also at the press briefing, the Vietnamese FM spokesperson expressed deep concern about the recent tensions related to the People's Democratic Republic of Korea (DPRK)'s preparation for satellite launch. Mr Nghi said Vietnam pays close attention to this issue and underlines the need to strictly comply with UN Security Council resolutions, particularly resolution 1874 on peace and stability in the region and the world.
